Hello, welcome to Cycling.io. My name is Nick Swan and this is my place for writing about cycling, bikes and cycling gear.
I’ve recently fallen back in love with cycling after a 20+ year gap. I use this site to review the gear I buy to try and help you make informed decisions.
I’ve always loved cycling. My first Saturday job was working in a bike shop around the age of 14. I joined the local cycling club, and regularly did 60-70 mile rides each Sunday on the club runs.
Unfortunately at the age of 16, just as junior racing opened up to me, I outgrew my bike. Without the funds to buy a bigger one, my attention turned back to playing football and other things 16 to 17 year old boys do!
A few years ago (now at the grand old age of 37), our daughter who was 3 at the time, was diagnosed with Leukaemia. Thankfully she responded really well to treatment and is still doing well. When your child goes through cancer treatment you stop looking after yourself, and so I put on plenty of weight through bad eating and lack of exercise.
Upon getting near the end of her treatment I wanted to do something to lose some weight, get fit, and raise some money for Clic Sargent. This was one of the charities that supported us throughout our daughters diagnosis and treatment.
On the way to one of her appointments in Exeter I saw the Ride Across Britain event taking place. Lands End to John O’Groats was on my bucket list, so as soon as I got home I looked it up and as soon as the 2019 event opened I entered.
And so my journey back to fitness, health and cycling began. Short 10 mile rides, slowly got further and further. I bought an indoor trainer and Zwift for the wet and windy Cornish days when I couldn’t get out. Slowly but surely the weight started to come off. You can read more about the 2019 Ride Across Britain event here….
Needless to say, I loved RAB so much I have entered it again in 2020!
